About Dr Tony Wong
Dr Wong is a Registered Clinical Psychologist of the Division of Clinical Psychology, Hong Kong Psychological Society. Having served as a clinical psychologist in the Hospital Authority Hong Kong for more than 25 years, Dr Wong has in-depth experiences in clinical psychological diagnoses, assessment and treatment for adolescents, adults and the elderlies. He is currently helping patients in private practice. Dr Wong is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin & English.
Dr Wong graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a master's degree in clinical psychology in 1995 and has since qualified as a clinical psychologist. In 2009, he was awarded a doctor of philosophy degree in clinical psychology by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He initially worked as a clinical psychologist in the Correctional Services Department and was later employed by the Hospital Authority. Over the last 25 years, he has served in hospital departments including Shatin Hospital Psychiatry and Adult Medical departments, Department of Psychiatry of Prince of Wales Hospital, Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, Department of Rehabilitation, Cheshire Home Shatin, United Christian Hospital Department of Psychiatry, United Christian Hospital Medical departments (including Surgery, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Pain Medicine, Neurology, Diabetes Clinic, Oncology, ENT and Family Medicine), Tseung Kwan O Hospital Psychiatry, Tseung Kwan O Hospital Adult Medicine, and Haven of Hope Hospital Internal Medicine, Palliative Care services. Dr Wong also has rich experience in furnishing intellectual assessment reports, court reports and psychological reports for patients who sustained work-related injuries or trauma.
Dr Wong advocates evidence-based practice in providing psychological treatments. He has applied cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to various mental and medical disorders, including cases with depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, mixed anxiety and depressive disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, somatic symptom disorder, illness anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, delusional disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, kleptomania, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, neurocognitive disorders, Adjustment Disorder, Personality Disorder, persistent complex bereavement, parenting stress, caregiver stress, stress related to marital problems, divorce, work, emigration, and more. He also assists with the psychological assessment, adjustment and rehabilitation of patients suffering from a variety of medical problems, including stroke, work-related injuries, trauma after traffic accident, post-concussion syndrome, chronic pain, migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, immune system disorders, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, bariatric surgery, atypical chest pain, tinnitus, cancer, and more.
In addition to traditional cognitive behavioral therapy, Dr Wong has always been keenly interested in the “third-wave” cognitive behavioral therapies. He had received training from acceptance and commitment therapy masters Dr Steven Hayes and Dr Robyn Walser, and applied acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to various mental and emotional problems as well as psychological adjustment caused by medical problems, with good efficacy. He was also trained in mindfulness-based therapy by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn, the first Western scholar in the study and application of mindfulness to psychological problems.
Dr Wong was the Vice-Chairman of the Division of Clinical Psychology of the Hong Kong Psychological Society (2009-2012). He is committed to promoting mental health education and evidence-based psychotherapy; he has been an honorary clinical supervisor of the Departments of Psychology of the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and an honorary psychotherapy supervisor for the Department of Psychiatry of United Christian Hospital.
Dr Wong has published researched articles in international psychological and medical journals, and co-authored books in Chinese. Over the years, he has provided training for various universities, educational institutions, non-government organizations and professional groups. He hosted lectures and workshops on mental health, stress management and emotion management.
